“Just Be A Good Person”~ Rose Namajunas a true champion
This past Saturday at UFC 217 in Madison Square Garden exploded with fireworks when three UFC belt titles changed hands. The ageless George St. Pierre returned from a four year lay-off to move up a weight division and choke out via rear naked choke its defending Middleweight champion Michael Bisping, T.J. Dillashaw T.K.O defending Battamweight champion and rival Cody Garbrandt, and the most shocking upset of all, 25 years old Rose Namajunas defeated undefeated Strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk (14-0) via K.O. @3:03 in the first round.
What made Rose’s win all the more impressive was not only her amazing performance in the fight but what she shared afterwards. Rose was keen to remind everyone that she’s nothing special, and just a regular person keen on using her martial arts skills to become a better role model and good person to stop the hate and negativity in the world.
A welcome change from the arrogant bullies and blowhards we’ve endured from so-called martial artists, champions and leaders who stoop to machismo bravado to appeal to their base supporters. These folks care little about the impressionable young minds they taint and sway through their misconduct as they continue to misuse their position of power in the worst of ways.
Hopefully, Rose’s message will set a new trend and encourage other champions to follow suit in returning the martial arts to what made it an honorably noble and life-altering pursuit for so many. Skills are a dime dozen but good ethics and good character are everlasting. As the new UFC Strawweight Champion stated, it boils down to being a good person and giving hugs.
Perhaps humility and kindness is also the secret to her beauty. Worth a try folks!
